Ella Jo Baker , born December 13, 1903, in Norfolk, Virginia developed a sense for social justice early in her life while listening to her grandmother tell stories about slave revolts. Baker studied at Shaw University in Raleigh, North Carolina, where she challenged unfair school policies. After graduating in 1927 as class valedictorian, she began joining social activist organizations committed to economic justice for all people including the NAACP, the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC), and the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee . She was a behind-the-scenes activist whose career spanned over five decades. She worked alongside some of the most famous civil rights leaders of the twentieth century, including: W.E.B. Du Bois, Thurgood Marshall, and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Seven of nine witnesses have since recanted their testimony alleging police coercion and intimidation. With significant doubt, and a lack of physical evidence, how is it that there are still those in our midst that continue to call for and even cheer the execution of Mr. Davis?
